Training tips for sensitive dogs
Some dogs -- like most sighthounds -- are sensitive, independent thinkers. With dogs like these we have to take extra care to make sure they don’t “check out” or get overwhelmed in a training session. While the truth is that these tips are useful when training with any dog, they are extra helpful for training with a sensitive dog!
Train in a calm, familiar environment with minimal distractions.
Use really super exciting treats or toys as rewards, something your dog doesn’t normally get.
Keep sessions short and fun – as little as 2-3 minutes a day can get you far!
If you do go a little longer, give your dog brain breaks. Take a quick play break, let your dog have a lick mat or snuffle mat, or if working outdoors let your dog sniff in the grass for a little while. This will help your dog reset, process, and be ready to learn more.
Celebrate the little wins! Training success is built with many small steps linked together. It all adds up!
Watch your dog’s body language for signs of stress, and try to always end on a good note. When you find yourself thinking “just one more rep” that’s usually when it’s time to stop!
Happy training!
